Xtra Time Web Desk: A double strike from Vinicius Junior inspired Real Madrid to a 3-1 win over Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final at the Alfredo Di Stefano on Tuesday night. Marco Asensio scored the other goal for the La Liga champions. In another Champions League last eight first leg clash, Manchester City defeated Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad stadium. Phil Foden scored the winner in the 90th minute.

After a sluggish start from Jurgen Klopp’s team, Vinicius Junior capitalised to convert Toni Kroos’ exquisite long pass to give Real Madrid a much deserved lead in the 27th-minute. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s poor header gifted Real Madrid a second with Marco Asensio lifting the ball over Alisson Becker and into the back of the net 11 minutes before the interval.

Klopp substituted Naby Keita with Thiago Alcantara just before half time and the move worked for the club from Anfield. Mohamed Salah reduced the margin in the 51st minute, but Real had a response of their own as Vinicius (65) struck his second of the night to restore Real’s two-goal advantage and leave Liverpool with plenty of work to do ahead of next week’s second leg.

In another Champions League quarter final first leg clash, Phil Foden’s last-minute goal helped Manchester City beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at the Etihad stadium. Kevin De Bruyne scored the other goal for City while M Reus reduced the margin for the German side.

Pep Guardiola’s side have now won 27 of their last 28 games in all competitions to remain on course for a historic quadruple of Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Both sides will meet again in Germany on April 14 with the winners facing Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the last four.
