Champions League: Real Madrid, Juventus face exit, Lyon to meet Man City in last 8

XtraTime Web Desk: Even a stunner from Cristiano Ronaldo failed to inspire Juventus to secure a berth in the last 8 stages of the Champions League as the Serie E champions bowed out on an away goal against Lyon at home on Friday night. The side from Turin did win 2-1 but as it turned out Memphis Depay’s penalty strike in the 12th minute of the match proved costly for Maurizio Sarri’s side. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Juve needed to score three goals to make it to the quarter finals. Ronaldo reduced the arrears two minutes before the break, converting from a penalty. The Portugese talisman then fired in a stunner in the 60th minute to give Juventus further hope. But Lyon withstood the late bombardment to book a quarter-final clash with Manchester City.

In another clash Man City capitalized two errors from Raphael Varane to beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Etihad stadium. The Premier League runners made it through to the quarters with a 4-2 aggregate. Raheem Sterling (9’) and Gabriel Jesus (68’) were on the score sheet for City while Karim Benzema scored the only goal for Madrid in the 28th minute.

Sterling put City ahead from a Gabriel Jesus pass after he got possession of the ball from a error by Varane. Benzema equalized for Real with a fine header off a cross from Rodrygo. But it was chaos in the second period as Real continued to mess around with the ball deep in their half. City eventually sealed the fate of the match after Jesus capitalized from a weak header from Varane.

Pep Guardiola’s City will now travel to Lisbon for the single-leg quarter-final against Lyon, on August 15.
