Xtra Time Web Desk : Virat Kohli on Saturday dropped a bombshell as he stepped down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team after the series defeat against South Africa. Kohli took to Twitter to make the mega announcement.

The decision by 33 year old batter, also the most successful Indian Test Captain ever, came as a shock to cricket fans and experts all over the world.

But as per latest reports, it has now come to light that Virat Kohli would have been sacked as India test captain after the South Africa tour, had he not resigned. The former India captain had a rift with BCCI top brass and selectors.

Reportedly, BCCI regime under Sourav Ganguly was prepared to sack Kohli from test captaincy after South Africa tour. The board was ready to take strong action against Kohli for his comments against BCCI and selectors before leaving for Rainbow nation. Kohli indirectly accused BCCI President and members of lying as he said that he didn’t receive any calls from BCCI members after he decided to step down from T20 captaincy in spite of Ganguly stating earlier that he personally requested him not to step down in the selection committee meeting.

The BCCI President wasn’t happy with such a situation and wanted to send a showcause notice to Kohli. But it was BCCI Secretary Jay Shah who ultimately convinced the 'Prince of Calcutta' not to send the notice ahead of an important Proteas series. Thus it was then decided that Kohli will be removed from captaincy after South Africa tour. However, the former India skipper stepped down himself, preventing chaos from erupting.
