BCCI AGM gives principle approval for 10 teams IPL from 2022 season

Xtra Time Web Desk: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday approved the inclusion of two more teams in IPL from 2022 season in the 89th AGM held in Ahmedabad. The decision to include two more teams was agreed in principle by the board members and the IPL Governing Council has been asked to work out the details of the process for the inclusion of two new teams.

The addition of two new teams was in the pipeline but the short time before the IPL 2021 season influenced the board members to decide that the two new teams will be included from 2022 season. There were talks of Ahmedabad getting a new team along with Pune with Adani Group and Sanjeev Goenka showing interests in buying a team.

Meanwhile there were a few key decisions taken at the AGM. It was unanimously decided that the BCCI will back ICC’s decision to approach the IOC to include cricket in 2028 Olympics. Former IPL Governing Council Chairman Rajiv Shukla took over as the vice president of the BCCI officially. The post was left vacant following Mahim Verma’s exit earlier in the year. Rajiv Shukla was elected unopposed as the vice president of the board. Former India cricketer Pragyan Ojha was drafted in the IPL Governing Council as the representative of Indian Cricketers Association (ICA).

It was also decided unanimously that BCCI secretary Jay Shah will represent the board to ICC.

On the issue of tax exemption to the ICC, for hosting the 2021 World T20, the BCCI has decided to take some more time to take a final call, and will seek the permission of the Indian government in the meanwhile. The Indian cricket board has time till December 31, 2020, to respond to the ICC.
