Image Source: twitter.com[/caption] Kolkata: One of a diehard fan of Mohun Bagan is fighting a lone battle with cancer. A known face among the Mariners, Bapi Majhi is fighting against poverty and cancer. Clad in green-and-maroon jersey, Majhi was a common sight at stadiums during Mohun Bagan matches. Whether it is Mumbai or Goa, Bangalore, Delhi or Kerala, Bapi was everywhere cheering for his favourite club.
Being diagnosed with the dreadful disease in January, Bapi is taking chemotherapies. Financial crisis is acting as a major hindrance in Bapi’s treatment. The injections cost around Rs.54000 each. One of East Bengal fan Mr. Prodip Chakraborty had helped him a lot by reducing the price of the injections. Mohun Bagan club has also given him an amount of Rs. 1 lakh. But he needs a lot more money for his treatment.
Majhi, a B.Com graduate sacrificed taking up a 9-5 job only because it would have made it difficult for him to be present at the ground where Mohun Bagan played. He used to run a tea-stall at Paikpara in North Kolkata that remains closed for most of the time these days. His elder brother, Sanatan Majhi used to open it once in a day in the evening. But the owner of the shop had already asked to shut it as soon as possible. The local Police Station has not stood beside him either.
Over the years, his constant presence at the matches has led to a special bond between him and the players. He was liked very much by Jose Ramirez Barreto who often offered him financial help. Bapi had a lot of sweet memories with Bagan which still makes him nostalgic. One of the sweetest memories was during the Federation Cup 2013. Once, Bagan’s Moroccan coach Karim Bencherifa invited Majhi and his family to a team dinner. Five years ago, he had to sale a couple of rooms that belonged to the family to continue his travels. His wife Sipra had to mortgage a few gold ornaments for him to travel to Kochi to watch a match.
It’s time for the Maidan to show its solidarity by coming forward and staying beside Bapi’s battle with cancer.

On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment
