Xtratime Web Desk: West Bengal registered their second win on the trot in this year’s Santosh Trophy after being a goal down in the first half against Maharashtra.

What could have been a disastrous result for Ranjan Chowdhury’s side had they not won, Bengal ran riots around the defence of the men from West, to register an emphatic 5-1 victory at the Howrah Stadium today.

Maharashtra went ahead which seemed to be a controversial goal scored by Leander Dharmai in the first half. Jiten Murmu, West Bengal’s captain, could have leveled things soon after had he not missed a few easy chances.

In the first half when Bengal were a goal down, last match’s hero, Sumit Das failed to put the ball into an empty net, though the Bengal midfielders created a lot of chances. It was 1-0 for Maharashtra at the lemon break before they got a thrashing from Chowdhury’s boys after the change of ends.

Soon after the second half began, Monotosh Chakladar leveled things for Bengal which was the turning point of the match. After this goal, Bengal started a rampage with goals coming from skipper Jiten Murmu and the man who replaced him at the end of the match, Rajan Barman.

The man from U-19 East Bengal side Bidyasagar Singh, who scored a goal against Manipur in the first match, scored a brace as well today.

Mohamadden Sporting Club’s Tirthankar Sarkar, who recently became a father, had a splendid game and orchestrated all the moves from the middle.

With two wins from as many games, Bengal are now on top of Group A with 6 points and have a goal difference of plus 7.
