The eyes of the Indian football fans were surrounded by the Maharashtra Derby as Indian football witnessed the Uruguayan superstar of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Diego Forlan for the first time in action on Indian soil. The Balewadi Sports Complex, in Pune was thoroughly entertained by some top class football from both the teams, but it was Mumbai City FC who managed to grab the vital 3 points from the away game against FC Pune City to start the new season in style.
The away team started the game with an attacking frame of mind but Antonio Habas' who had to sit out of the technical zone owing to a suspension shaped his new team FC Pune City in his usual defensive style. Though the likes of Oberman, Jonathan Lucca, Arata, Narayan Das and Rahul Bheke were bringing some brisk counter attacks to put pressure on the away side. Alexandre Guimaraes, the Costa Rican mastermind used Diego Forlan as a lone forward on the upfront with Leo Costa, Matias Defederico and Vadocz were creating attacks from the wings incessantly to trouble Apoula Edel Bete between the sticks.
The first meaningful attack came for FC Pune City in the 38 minutes as Izumi received the ball in the left flank, cut back in and then sent an absolutely peach of a pass by looking the other way. Gustavo Oberman received the ball and fired in a shot on the turn with his left foot but was saved by Neto.
Mumbai came back strongly with the reply in the 45th minute as Diego Forlan found Vadocz with a brilliant pass but Gourmangi Singh made a made a tremendous block on the face of the goal.
The illusive moment came in the 69th minute of the game as Rahul Bheke found himself in acres of space in the right wing. He took his time and whipped in a cross which Forlan set up for Defederico with the lightest of touches. Matías Defederico brought it in his control and fired in a low shot with his left boot, aiming at the bottom corner and found the back of the netnwith an excellent finish. Forlán displayed his class with that touch.
The win would certainly give the Mumbai franchise the much needed confidence before playing their following games as they managed to steal the show without the likes of Sunil Chettri and Sony Norde. On the other end, Habas needs to find his right combination for Pune to come back from the unexpected start they had.
