File Pic.[/caption] New Delhi: Real Madrid's former star Fernando Morientes will be launching La Liga in India at a function in the capital today. It is part of a promotional event the Spanish football league (LaLiga) has introduced last year. Morientes is one of the ten players who serve as Liga BBVA ambassadors responsible for expanding the international image of the competition. Apart from Morientes other players include Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos, Frederic Kanoute, Christian Karembeu, Patrick Kluivert, David Albelda, Michel Salgado, Ismael Urzaiz, and Gaizka Mendieta. India is a key territory in La Liga's internationalisation process. The league is planning to open its headquarters in New Delhi, where it will run many of the operations focusing on promoting the Spanish football brand across Asia. The programme will also be attended by the Spanish Davis Cup team that includes Rafael Nadal , David Ferrer and doubles specialists Marc and Feliciano Lopez . La Liga is one of the associate sponsor of the Davis Cup tie between India and Spain starting tomorrow. Morientes is regarded as a Spanish football legend who played for top La Liga clubs. But his most successful stint was with La Liga giants Real Madrid. He played for a number of clubs during his career, including Real Madrid, Monaco, Liverpool and Valencia. He has scored 124 goals in 337 games in La Liga over the course of 15 seasons. He earned 11 major honours with the first club, including three Champions League trophies. He also played 47 times for the Spanish national team, representing the country in two World Cups (totalling five goals) and one European Championship.
