For Waugh and his family it is extremely shocking to hear such comments from someone who was an integral member in that famous world beating Australian team. Waugh was in Kolkata for his charitable institution Udayan in Barackpore. The former Australian captain is very involved with his charity in Sydney- as the Steve Waugh Foundation has just crossed 10 years. In a interview to a leading Bengali daily during his visit to Kolkata Waugh gave his reactions about the recent controversy surrounding Warne’s comments that made headlines Down Under. You have been criticized quite often on Channel Nine. Shane Warne’s comments about you have caused a ripple in the cricketing fraternity Down Under. What is your take on the entire episode? Look, I have nothing to comment really. It was extremely hurting for the family. My friends were shocked to hear such comments about me from Warne. But I did not find any reason to give any reaction about his comments. Let him say whatever he wants about me. As a captain you cannot make everyone happy. Did it not hurt to see someone you backed making such comments about you? Yes, it definitely hurt me not because his remarks about me but to have labeled the dressing room as an unhappy one. There have been a lot of reactions coming in support of you. Most of your teammates from that great Australian team have stood beside you. Yes, I have got a lot of support from all over the cricket world. I have received no less than a 1000 e-mails in support of me. Gilchrist , Hayden , Langer have all stood beside me. It was extremely surprising to hear Shane labeling you as a selfish cricketer? I was surprised too. I have always given the teams cause a priority. Whatever I have done was for the winning cause of the Australian team. And you end up hearing that I was selfish. But it is your record that speaks for yourself. I am not concerned about it. People might feel I am doing propaganda about myself. Steve Waugh has never in his life felt the need of doing such things. It seem you still have not got it behind even after a month Warne made such a comment. I feel ashamed about that team which had such wonderful moments. Did it not establish that we were not a happy family? How can we go on to become a world beating side if we did not have a happy dressing room. It would have been impossible. Ask any member of that team, most of them will agree it was such a happy dressing room. We have shared some best moments in our lives. I just want to leave a message for my friend – He could you forget such wonderful moments we shared during that period? Has your memory become short lived friend?
