Image Source: Xtra Time[/caption] Bengaluru: Anil Kumble will have a very tricky decision to take in his tenure as India coach as to who bats in at No. 3 in test matches. The former India captain will have to take a call between Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. Post Dravid’s retirement, it has been the major area of concern for India particularly in overseas tests. As many as three players have been tried at No. 3 in the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma. The inconsistency in Rohit Sharma’s form has led to the deletion of his name from the list. But both Rahane and Pujara have shown great temperament while batting at number 3 to go with their classy batting styles. During the last test series against South Africa, Rahane batting in at No. 5 scored the only century (in fact he scored centuries in both innings at Kotla) of the series. The newly appointed vice captain of Indian test team amassed 266 runs at an average of 53.20 in the 4 test series. While Pujara could only manage to score 202 runs in the same series with a highest score of 77 at an average of 33.66. He was demoted in the batting order in the second innings while Rohit batted at No. 3. Pujara started off well, but his batting experienced a sharp dip in the challenging conditions of Australia and England last year. After scoring just one fifty in 14 innings he was also dropped from the Indian team. The Saurashtra right-hander, who averages 75 at home, but only 29 away, has done much to ensure he is back in the reckoning. He played county cricket for Yorkshire and scored 264 runs in four games, at an average of 52, including a match-winning 133 not out in his last match, against Hampshire. On the other hand, Rahane has showed he too has a Dravid-like presence at the crease, has the game and temperament to succeed in all conditions as he proved in the last year or so. Rahane has so far played in 22 tests since making his debut against England in 2013. The talented Mumbai batsman has so far scored 1619 runs mostly batting down the order. But in his last two series against Sri Lanka and South Africa at home, he has been very impressive. He scored 142 runs against Sri Lanka in the two test matches which included a match winning knock of 126 runs in Colombo. Pujara also has been impressive in his career so far scoring 2420 runs in 32 tests. His 206 runs against England in Ahmedabad have been praiseworthy. But as far as the practice session is concerned, Rahane was asked to bat at No. 3 by newly appointed India coach Kumble on Friday. The Mumbaikar was promoted ahead of Pujara who came in to bat at No 6 during the batting practice at NCA. With Dhawan and Vijay likely to open in the first test against West Indies in Antigua which starts from July 22, Rahane might come in at No. 3. Indian test captain Virat Kohli will be the next to go in at No 4 followed by Pujara , Rohit Sharma and Saha. Ashwin will come in at No 8 followed by Amit Mishra , Ishant and Umesh Yadav depending upon the conditions that prevail. The Indian cricketers had a rigorous training session on Friday as well with the second session dedicated to fielding. Indian captain Virat Kohli was seen keeping wickets for a brief period in place of Saha as the wicketkeeper was instructed by Kumble to get ready for batting. The Indian captain was in a jovial mood right throughout the fielding session.
