Internet Desk:
The rift between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli takes a new turn as the Indian skipper deleted his tweet which he posted to welcome Kumble on his post the last year.

Kohli who posted the tweet on June 23, 2016 after Kumble’s appointment and then deleted the tweet after the former coach, made it public that his main reason for resignation was Kohli.

He had tweeted “Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 [Anil Kumble] Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you.”

“I was surprised since I had always respected the role boundaries between captain and coach,” read Anil Kumble’s post, adding that the BCCI had attempted to resolve the misunderstandings between the captain and him, but “it was apparent that the partnership was untenable and I, therefore, believe it is best for me to move on”.

Although Kumble’s term was to end after the ICC Champions Trophy he was believed to lead the Indian team in the West Indies tour.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) confirms that Mr Anil Kumble has withdrawn his services as the post of the Head Coach for the Senior India Men’s team. While the Cricket Advisory Committee had endorsed an extension to his tenure as Head Coach, Mr Anil Kumble has decided not to continue as the coach,” BCCI said in a statement.

“We wish to place on record our sincere appreciation for the immense contribution by Anil Kumble to the team which enabled India to attain the No.1 Test position. Indian cricket needs his continued contribution in various capacities and wishes him all the best in his future endeavour,” BCCI Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary was quoted as saying in the statement.

Speaking exclusively to Crickenext, a BCCI official said that CEO Rahul Johri had offered Kumble a small extension but he said no to it.

“BCCI CEO Rahul Johri had offered Kumble a two-week extension till the time there could have more clarity in the matter, but he refused to take it,” said the source.

“One thing that is clear is that Kohli and Kumble need to be on the same page if Kumble is to get an extension. Otherwise, a situation might arise wherein the players might find it difficult to handle the scenario. Imagine the coach wanting something and the skipper asking the players to do something else. That is a scenario that must be avoided,” said a source from the BCCI.

Bitter relationship among the duo was visually apparent when both were hardly seen together in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Though Kohli dismissed any rumours regarding the rift the only time they conversed was on the eve of the final of the tournament.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was literally pushed to submit his resume when the BCCI sent out invitation for the post of head coach when Kumble’s contract was set to end.

“We have contacted Sehwag during the IPL and asked him to consider applying for the job of India coach. But he won’t be the only one applying because we expect other former players to also throw their hats in the ring,” a top BCCI official said earlier.

Apart from Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput and Dodda Ganesh are the other who had applied for the post. According to recent news former Australia pacer Craig McDermott has apparently applied for the post but is not eligible for the interview as his application came after the deadline set by BCCI.
