Internet Desk: South African left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso could be a doubt for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament after being reported for a suspected illegal bowling action. Phangiso was reported after helping the Lions franchise reach the final of the domestic one-day competition by beating the Warriors in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Phangiso will have to undergo independent analysis by a member of the ICC Panel of Human Movement Specialists. He is permitted to bowl until the results of the testing are known.
It is unlikely this could happen before South Africa depart for the World T20 and Cricket South Africa will have to decide whether Phangiso should continue to be a part of their squad.
Phangiso has been a regular member of South African limited overs teams, primarily as a back-up to leg-spinner Imran Tahir. He went to the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand but did not play.
He was sanctioned by Cricket South Africa (CSA) after being taken off a flight in Dubai for allegedly drunken and disorderly behaviour while on the way home from a one-day series in India last November. News of the incident was only confirmed by CSA after it emerged in a recent newspaper report.
Last Sunday he apologised after being spotted apparently imitating someone sniffing cocaine while on the bench during South Africa’s Twenty20 international win against England. He admitted his action was “silly and irresponsible”.
