Kolkata: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has welcomed Mahendra Singh’s decision to bat at No. 4 in ODI’s. The Indian captain has been promoting himself up in the batting order in the ensuing One Day series against New Zealand. Sourav himself has often written in his columns that Dhoni should promote himself up in the batting order.

“Let him play at number four. He will finish from there. Finisher does not mean he has to bat from the 40th over. Virat (Kohli) bats at three and he is finishing games. It’s a wrong concept that a finisher has to come lower down the order. Dhoni got India over the ropes in the other match batting at four.” Sourav said at a function to announce the partnership of VLCC with Cricket Association of Bengal to promote cricket and other sports in the districts.

The elegant left hander also disagreed that the current Indian team is over dependent on Virat Kohli. According to Sourav, “He (Virat Kohli) is an excellent player, but I don’t think the team is becoming too dependent on him. New Zealand is a good side. They will win some matches also.”

Bengal after making a great start to their Ranji campaign this season are in a spot against Railways on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Group A clash in Dharamsala. Bengal was bowled out for 205 runs in 69.5 overs. The Cricket Association of Bengal President does not want to read too much into their performance on Thursday. “There will be a bad day and a good day. We will assess it at the end of the season,” commented Sourav.

Asked if the results of the Vision 2020 were showing, he added: “This is the common system around the world. It’s not rocket science. Keep the players together and get them trained. Go to Barcelona, Manchester United, Australia or England it’s the same thing. Only the system of training varies from sport to sport. You give the best facilities, best coaches and get the best players.”

Talking about the agreement with VLCC, he added: “We thank VLCC for the support. We are looking after cricket. We will support cricket. It is a two year deal. But they need more sponsors. This is not enough.”

Mr Asutosh Bhardwaj, Chief Business Officer, VLCC, said : “We can do a lot for district players. We have something called DNA Test that will help the players understand their body and what nutrition they need to stay healthy. Our understanding is both through services and financial commitments.”
