Xtra Time Web Desk: Chetan Sharma led national selection committee is likely to pick the test squad only for the tour to South Africa. The ODI squad will be announced at a later date. The team selection which was supposed to be held on Tuesday had to be postponed after India captain Virat Kohli and head coach Rahul Dravid had a disagreement over selection. The Chetan Sharma-led committee postponed the announcement to Wednesday. It is learnt the two has different views on Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma’s places in the Test squad.

The team is expected to be announced on Wednesday. Apart from Kohli and Dravid, Rohit Sharma is also expected to be a part of the meeting. Rohit is expected to hand over the Test vice-captaincy in place of Rahane as the selectors don’t want to put any additional burden on the Mumbaikar.

Virat Kohli’s ODI captaincy is of sensitive matter. While Kohli stepped down from the T20 captaincy, he retained the leadership role in ODIs. But many within BCCI doesn’t want to see split captaincy in white-ball formats. They want Rohit Sharma to take over ODI captaincy as India begin preparations for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

However, the BCCI doesn’t want to disrespect Kohli and take away his ODI captaincy. Instead, they will propose the idea to Kohli and will try to convince him to step down voluntarily while be in the leadership group along with Rohit Sharma. But as there are not many ODI matches in 2022, it is unlikely that the Indian board will remove Kohli from ODI captaincy on the South Africa tour, especially where he will be playing his 100th Test.
