Meet Deepa Malik, the First Indian Woman to Win a Medal in the Paralympics

Internet Desk : India’s Deepa Malik has paved her way into the history books by becoming the first Indian woman athlete to win a medal at Rio Paralympics 2016. Deepa bagged a silver medal in the shot-put F-53 event as her throw of 4.61m was the best among her six attempts.

“I want to use this medal to support women with disabilities in India. This journey has been wonderful for me and my entire family, I am proud to be the oldest athlete in the team and win a medal,” Deepa said immediately after clinching the historic silver.

With the inclusion of the silver medal, India has now three medals so far at the Rio Paralympics.

Apart from shotput, Deepa has participated in javelin throw and swimming. She has also been a motivational speaker and won medals in swimming at various international competitions. She also holds the Asian record in javelin throw, and has the World Championships silver medals in shot put and discus back in 2011.
