Rio 2016: India’s Medal hope in table tennis ended as four paddlers lost

Internet Desk: Hope for Medal from the table tennis arena ended as all the four paddlers lost their matches. India had two male and two female paddlers competing in Rio in their single’s matches. yesterday they all lost in their respective matches.

Mouma Das’ Olympic appearance was short-lived as the Indian veteran lost to higher-ranked Romanian, Daniela Dodean Monteiro, in the first round of the women’s singles table tennis competition in Rio today.

World No.150 Das failed to put up much of a fight against her 58th-ranked opponent losing 2-11, 7-11, 7-11, 2-11. Das had qualified for her second Olympics after making the debut in Athens 12 years ago.

On the other hand, Batra, after a neck to neck fight with Katarzyna Grzybowska-Franc of Poland, exited the tournament with disappointment. Batra lost to Katarzyna 4-2, 10-12, 11-6, 14-12, 8-11, 11-4, 14-12.

Batra is India’s one of the biggest hope for medals this Olympics. The paddler qualified for the event as she topped her group in South Asian Olympic qualifiers in Hong Kong. Das won the Stage 2 finals of the same tournament to win her chance to Rio Olympics.

It was no different in the men’s section as world number 68 Soumyajit Ghosh also made a first round exit losing to Padasak Tanviriyavechakul by 1-4 margin in 35 minutes.

Left-handed Padasak, a medalist at the South East Asian Games won 11-8,11-6, 12-14 11-6, 13-11 in a well-contested match which was more closely fought than the scoreline would suggest.

losing all hopes of any Medal from the Rio table tennis later both the Indian male paddlers lost their matches. Achanta Sharat Kamal and Soumyajit Ghosh both fought hard to lose their games.

Indian top seed Soumyajit lost to Tanviriyavechakul Padasak of Thailand. In the first two sets Soumyajit played some give up match losing by 11-8 and 11-6. In the third set he fought back a little by winning it 14-12. As the expectation rose on him after the third set he lost the later two sets by 11-6 and 14-12.

In the other match Sharath Kamal lost to Romanian paddler Adrian Crisan. He played alike Soumyajit. He lost first two sets, won the third set and further lost the remaining two sets. he lost to Adrian by 8-11, 12-14, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11. After this lose Sharat Kamal loses his hope in his third Olympic.
