Police arrests suspect who gave death threat to Sourav Ganguly

Kolkata: Midnapore police has arrested a suspected person believed to have sent the death threat letter to Cricket Association of Bengal President Sourav Ganguly. The person named Nirmalya Samanta, is a resident of Aurobindo Nagar in Midnapore. He has been suspected of sending the letter to Sourav.

The district police of Midnapore acted within four days after receiving a written complaint from Sourav.

Cricket Association of Bengal President Sourav Ganguly has filed a written complaint at Behala Police Station on last Tuesday following the recent death threat. The former India captain was supposed to travel to Midnapore (W) to attend the District Sports Association function on January 19.

Sourav received a letter with a death threat from Mr Zulfaqar Ali, if he travelled to Midnapore (W) to attend a District Sports Association program. He was supposed to be the chief guest for a program organized by the District Sports Association.

Police is investigating whether Nirmalya has got any connection with Mr Zulfaqar Ali and what transpired him to send such a letter with death threat to the former India captain.

Meanwhile the program Sourav was supposed to attend organised by Ashish Chakraborti who is also an MLA of Garbeta when contacted today said, “I have heard of the arrest made by the superintendent of West Midnapore, that person stays near my locality. I am not sure of his intent, I am still trying to identify whether this was done due to internal party politics or CAB inner politics. I have not spoken to Sourav in the last few days but will talk to him soon to know whether he will attend the program here or cancel it.”
