Xtra Time Web Desk: Team India captain Rohit Sharma on Saturday provided a major update on Shubman Gill. According to Rohit, Gill is not ruled out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 opening game against Australia on Sunday.

“Gill is not feeling well, giving him every chance to see how he feels. Not ruled out yet,” Rohit said.

“Shubman Gill is sick; I feel for him. I want him to be well. As a human being first, not as captain. He is a young boy, has fit body and he will recover,” the Indian cricket team skipper added.

Gill, who is the highest run-scorer in ODIs this year, is suffering from dengue fever which is set to rule him out of India’s opening game against Australia at the MA Chidambaram stadium on Sunday.

If Gill is tested positive for dengue, it would at least take a week to recover which puts a big question on his availability for the all-important game against Pakistan as well on October 14.

The Indian opener has been the standout performer in the World Cup year, especially in the ODI format. The 23-year-old has smashed 1,230 runs in the 2023 season - the most by any batter this year. Averaging 72.35, Gill has already notched up five centuries for the Men In Blue. Gill achieved a career-high world number two ranking in the ODI standings.

If Gill is unavailable for the Australia encounter, Ishan Kishan will replace him in the playing XI.
