Internet Desk: Indian woman weightlifter Mirabai Chanu disappointed in her 48kg category last night. After so many disappointments from the tennis and table tennis field this time hope from weightlifting also ended.

Competing in Group A, Chanu lifted 82 kilograms in the snatch event, but could not complete any of her lifts in the clean and jerk. At the start of the competition, Mirabai failed in the first attempt of snatch but came back with a 82kg lift in the second attempt. Later, she tried improving it in the third event but could not lift it either.

In the clean and jerk event, Mirabai began with an attempt of 104kg but she could not lift it. In the second attempt, she tried to go for 106kg, one less than her personal best. She failed to lock in the jerk and could not make it. In the third and final lift, she again tried 106 but could not lift it.

In fact out of six chances – three in snatch and three in clean and jerk – Mirabai could pick the weight up just once. The 21-year-old lifter could not even match the performance she had given during the selection trials at Patiala in June, where she had bettered her own record by 1kg in snatch, picking up 85kg and equalled the record of N Kunjarani Devi (107kg) in clean and jerk.

The gold in the 48kg women’s weightlifting was won by Thailand’s Sopita Tanasan with a total lift of 200kg and silver was won by Augustiani of Indonesia, who lifted 192kg. Japan’s Miyake won the bronze with a total lift of 188kg.
