Royal Challengers pips Knight Riders to pick Tymal Mills for 12 crore

Ben-Stokes
England all-rounder was roped in by Rising Pune Supergiants at the IPL auction for 14.5 crore.

Internet Desk: As expected Ben Stokes drew a maximum bid amount as he was bought for a whopping 14.5 crore by Rising Pune Supergiants. Stokes who had a base price of INR 2 crore was roped in by the Sanjeev Goenka owned franchise at the at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Bengaluru.

To start with it was a two way race to get Stokes as Mumbai Indians started the bid along with Delhi Daredevils. Sunrisers Hyderabad joined the race at 13.5 crore but it was Rising Pune Supergiants, who had the last laugh.

The England all-rounder is a hot property in world cricket in this format. It will be his debut at this format, having represented Durham in the shortest format of the game. However, he hasn’t played a franchise T20 tournament before. He has over 1,000 T20 runs, while he also has 32 wickets in the format from 77 matches, as he looks to prove himself in the tournament.

The top seven batters for Rising Pune Supergiants looked quite solid with Steve Smith, Faf du Plesis, MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, Mitchell Marsh, Ben Stokes and Ravichandran Ashwin. Rising Pune Supergiants more than made up for the dismal pick in the auction last season.

The franchise from Pune, with MS Dhoni at helm had all the ammunitions in place to succeed but off-form of key players and losing many of their stars due to injury ensured they lingered at the last spot in majority of the tournament.

The RPS management took a bold decision in giving the captaincy to Steve Smith on Sunday.

Apart from Ben Stokes, other notable buys in the auction were England T20 captain Eoin Morgan joining Kings XI Punjab for INR 2 crore. But the most surprising was England T20 bowler Tymal Mills bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 12 crore. It was a two way race for Mills with Knight Riders going all out to have him in the side, but it was Royal Challengers who had the last laugh.

The Knights however picked New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult for INR 5 crore. Another fast bowler in Knight Riders radar Kagiso Rabada was bought by Delhi Daredevils for INR 5 crore. Daredevils further consolidated their fast bowling by picking Aussie Pat Cummins for INR 4.5 crore as well. Mumbai Indians bought Mitchell Johnson for INR 2 crore. Indian speedster Ishant Sharma went unsold at a base price of INR 2 crore.

It was a bit surprising to see other England T20 specialists like Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Chris Jordan all going un-sold. Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews was roped in Delhi Daredevils for INR 2 crore while Pawan Negi was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 1 crore.

All the capped spinners that included Imran Tahir, Brad Hogg, Ish Sodhi, Pragyan Ojha also went unsold.

Eight franchise teams are fighting it out for the best possible players in their side to complete the squad and be eligible to compete in the 10th edition of the IPL, starting April 5.

More than 350 players are being auctioned this year, and about 76 players, along with 28 overseas players are to be auctioned, as the world is witnessing a war of money among the franchises to grab the best possible player.
