Kolkata: Trevor James Morgan was confirmed as coach of East Bengal club on Wednesday. The British coach will be making a comeback with Red and Golds after a gap of 2 years 11 months. The last time he coached the Kolkata giants was during the season 2010-2011 to 2012-13 . He will replace Biswajit Bhattacharya , who resigned as the coach of the club following the embarrassing loss against Bengaluru FC in I League . Morgan will be taking the responsibility from the forthcoming Federation Cup 2016.
The executive committee of East Bengal club sat down among themselves to decide who will be replacing Biswajit Bhattacharya. It was unanimously decided that Trevor Morgan, who have been reasonably successful with the Red and Golds will take the role of coach of the senior team. During the tenure of Morgan, East Bengal won the Federation Cup twice along with being the runners in I League on three occasions. He also helped the club winning the Kolkata League three times and IFA shield .
Club secretary Kalyan Majumder, who was also present in today’s meeting, avoided the scribes for any comment. In fact Mr Kalyan Majumder was not present when the football secretary was making the announcement of Morgan as coach of the club. Kalyan Majumder, believed to be a hardcore critic of Morgan did not press too much against his appointment .
According to football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya, “We have had a word with Morgan. He has given his consent to coach our senior football team. He will come to Kolkata on Saturday or Sunday. He will be travelling to Shillong to watch East Bengal’s match against Shillong Lajong in the I League. The contract is only for Federation Cup. We will decide about the next season only after having elaborate discussion with him.”
Morgan has a contract with Kerala Blasters in the ISL till June. The club is yet to decide whether to continue with him as the coach for the I League next season. “He has a contract with Kerala Blasters in the ISL. We are willing to keep him as the coach for the next season. It depends entirely on him to decide whether he wish to renew his contract with Blasters or not.”
According to sources in the club, the British coach wants his team of support staff. Earlier during his tenure, there was a controversy surrounding the appointment of Atanu Bhattacharya as goalkeeper coach. So, with him taking the responsibility as the coach, the future of Sanjay Majhi, Debjit Ghosh and Sammy Omollo are in serious doubts.
