Internet Desk: Real Madrid has stood behind Cristiano Ronaldo over his alleged tax evasion. In a statement released on Tuesday, Real Madrid has claimed the star footballer deserved “maximum respect” amid allegations of tax evasion in Spain.

Gestifute, the company operated by Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes, insisted last week the Portuguese star is fully compliant with all obligations relating to taxation.

Real Madrid has joined Ronaldo’s agent in adding their voice to the denials of any wrongdoing on the part of the 31-year-old superstar.

A statement released on the club website read: “Following the information published in the last few days and having seen the certificate published by the Tax Agency, through which it is confirmed that our player, Cristiano Ronaldo, is aware of all his tax obligations, Real Madrid demands the maximum respect for a player such as Cristiano Ronaldo, whose conduct has been absolutely exemplary during the whole of his career at our club.”

Ronaldo has been accused of avoiding paying tax which is estimated around 150 million euros. If he is proven guilty, then he could end up behind the bars.

According to Jose Maria Mollinedo, secretary general of Gestha, the Real Madrid footballer could be facing half a dozen years behind bars.

“We would be advising aggravated tax fraud,” Mollinedo told RAC1. “This means a minimum prison sentence of two years for each defrauded year.

“If the investigation is looking at the last three years that would mean at least six years of imprisonment.

Ronaldo will be part of Real Madrid squad as it hosts Borussia Dortmund in the last group match of Champions League on Wednesday.
