Suman Chakravorty and Sabyasachi Bagchi, New Delhi: Indian U17 colts made a valiant outing in their first ever FIFA U17 World Cup experience despite going down by a 0-3 margin against a mighty The USA side. A first half penalty goal from Joshua Sargent and two second half goals from Chris Durkin and Andrew Carleton shattered the indomitable spirit of the Indian lads.
The Indian side started the game with a compact defensive formation with young Abhijit Sarkar the lone target-man on the upfront. But it was a controversial penalty decision against India in the 29th minute, when right full-back Jitendra Singh tripped Tim Weah inside the box gave India the early blow. Star forward Joshua Sargent made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-0. India though started playing positively in the second half but conceded early against the run of play as Chris Durkin made it 2-0 in their favour through a deflected volley.
India coach Matos made two swift attacking changes and bringing on young Rahim Ali gave India a new oxygen. The young lad from Bengal played some amazing football since he came on and troubled the American defence all through. His powerful volley in the 83rd minute came off the frame of the goal. Young Komal Thatal though was the best player for India as he showed his magical skills throughout the game to put the Americans under pressure throughout the game.
The USA drew the final blood through a fast counter attack, as Andrew Carleton eased past Dheeraj in the goal.
India will next play Colombia on the 9th October.
