EPL : Manchester United losses 1-2 to Norwich at Old Trafford

Rooney-vs-NorwichManchester , December 19: Will United boss Louis Van Gaal face a similar fate like Jose Mourinho . The Dutch coach is under tremendous pressure no doubt to save his job as United manager following United’s 1-2 loss to Norwich at home . Chelsea owner  Roman Abramovich sacked Mourinho following his dismal season with Chelsea so far . The loss to Norwich meant Van Gaal’s men found themselves out of the top-four place with 29 points from 17 games.

Even as the shockwaves resulted from the sacking of Mourinho from Stamford Bridge continue to occupy headlines, United’s defeat arrived as a truly shocking result.

It’s true that United have lost their invincibility at home, but after losing to Bournemouth in the previous game, and the exit from the Champions League, they needed a win desperately.

Besides, with the Mourinho lesson, van Gaal should have done enough to avoid losing to a struggling Norwich side. It was, in fact, Norwich’s first win in five matches and second in ten.

But that never happened, and lost the match, luckily or unluckily.

United’s overall performance, at least in the league, is not that bad as Chelsea’s but with Mourinho available, Glazers in the Old Trafford board will have doubts over the Dutchman’s continued role.

This was also Manchester United’s first loss at home to Norwich in more than 26 years heaped more pressure on manager Louis van Gaal on Saturday.

Norwich won 2-1 with goals either side of halftime. United didn’t score until more than an hour into game, and couldn’t prevent falling to Norwich at Old Trafford for the first time since Aug. 30, 1989, three years before the English Premier League began.

United dropped to fifth in the standings, nine points behind leader Leicester.

Striker Cameron Jerome evaded two challenges before beating David de Gea in the penalty area for the opening goal, then Jerome, on a breakaway, threaded the ball to Alexander Tettey, who beat De Gea with a low shot inside his near post.

Anthony Martial lashed in United’s reply from close range.
