Durand Cup 2021: COVID-19 scare in Army Red squad see Bengaluru Utd get a bye in Q/F; Md Sporting reach semis
Xtra Time Web Desk: Bengaluru United entered the semi finals of the 130th edition of Durand Cup courtesy a bye after a COVID-19 outbreak in Army Red camp on Thursday. The match was scheduled to take place in Kalyani on Friday but has been cancelled. Army Red decided to withdraw from the tournament due to positive cases in their camp.
“All decisions have been taken, keeping in mind the health and safety of players and officials primarily and the continuity and success of the tournament,” said a statement by the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Durand Cup.
The local organizing committee (LOC) of the tournament decided to move the quarter final game between FC Goa and Delhi FC, originally scheduled for Friday, September 24 at the Mohun Bagan ground, to the Kalyani stadium. It is learnt both the teams have reservations playing at the venue on the grounds of player health safety.
The organizers rescheduled the match to Kalyani after Mohun Bagan ground is unplayable due to the incessant rain in Kolkata.
In the first quarter final, Mohammedan Sporting defeated Gokulam Kerala 1-0 to march into the last four. Marcus Joseph scored the winner in the 44th minute against the I League champions.
