Asian Boxing Championships: Mary Kom wins record fifth title

Internet Desk: Legendary Indian boxer and five-time World Champion MC Mary Kom has created history today by winning her fifth gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championships by beating DPR Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the final. Mary thumped her opponent in the final bout by 5-0 through with an unanimous decision from the judges.

Both the finalists started aggressively in the first round to take an early lead. Mary tried to hit some knock-out punches in the first round but Kim didn’t lose her focus and she also landed some punches on her own before the end of the first round.

The second and third round was all about mind games as the star Indian boxer took some time to understand the tactics of her opponent before get into full attack. Mary made full use of her defensive capabilities against Kim Hyang Mi and she outclassed her opponent by landing some massive punches when she got the opportunities.

The 34-year-old comprehensively beat Hyang Mi Kim of Korea in the 48-kg category to show that she is still a force to reckon with.

“I I am really happy the way this Championship has panned out,” Mary said, after her victory. “I would like to dedicate this victory to all those who have supported me even though the world had written me off. I would like to thank my coaching staff who worked hard with me over the last few months,” she added.

“A special word for the professional setup that BFI has put in place, ensuring the best facilities was given during the month-long camp and all the exposure trips for the team. Also, I am thankful to BFI president Mr. Ajay Singh especially for showing faith in me,” a teary-eyed Mary said.

“Mary Kom’s gold at the Asian Boxing Championship is a huge victory for India’s women power. At 34, this mother of 3 has shown that, with grit and determination, you can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds,” BFI President Mr Ajay Singh said. “Mary Kom is a huge inspiration for all Indians and we are proud of her victory today,” he added.

Mary Kom, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP as well as a former Olympic bronze-medallist, made her in ring appearance with 48kg after five long years. In last five years she competed in 51kg category, which was made an Olympic category since 2012.
