Internet Desk: Ashley Westwood, the biggest reason behind the ineffable success of Bengaluru FC since the birth of the Bengaluru based I-League giant is no longer a part of the side these days. Former Barcelona and Galatasaray coaching staff Albert Roca has no doubt been doing a great job since Ashley left the hot seat of BFC. But the fans, the players and more importantly, Indian football know the significance Ashley Westwood has in Bengaluru FC. After reaching the final of the AFC Cup as the first ever Indian football club, Ashley too, is feeling proud of his students. In an exclusive interview with www.xtratime.in , the former Bengaluru Head Coach revealed the journey, the passion and the reason behind this amazing success of BFC. Here goes the excerpts:

XT: What do you think of the unbelievable success story of BFC?

Westwood: It’s been great. All what I can say is that, the journey towards the final of AFC Cup is been a three and a half years’ hard work.

XT: You had been an instrumental figure in Bengaluru FC. What are the special things you will ask the other Indian clubs to learn from BFC?

Westwood: Well, the attitude, the structure, the overall environment of the club and of course the hunger to achieve success. I worked in that club for a long time and the way they responded to form this club as a true professional football club is simply amazing. The players, officials, support staff, the fans, all have contributions behind this one.

XT: The young academy players of Bengaluru FC have done wonders in the AFC Cup. You showed a lot of faith to promote them. What special attributes did you find in them?

Westwood: Well, most importantly their characters, the hard work, the hunger of learning and most importantly the dedication to earn their places in the squad, were something really special. I’m really happy with them. They will get better and better in future.

XT: Sunil Chettri once again produced a match-winning contribution last night against the defending AFC Cup champions. What’s your take on it?

Westwood: He has been the biggest icon in Indian football. A fantastic player, a genuine match winner and a personality which can motivate the entire team. Indian football is enriched by his calibre.

XT: Who according to you is more influential in BFC, Sunil or Eugeneson?

Westwood: I think Sunil. He has been a stimulating character. More importantly, Indian football needs goal scorers and Sunil is the one over the years. He has been an inspiration on and off the field. Eugeneson is also a magnificent player, a team-man but Sunil will be ahead in terms of the importance.

XT: Do you repent for leaving BFC as the team will now be representing the country in the AFC Cup final?

Westwood: Ahh! Not really (smiles), this is football. BFC has been a fantastic part of my career and I wish all the success to them in future. I hope they will keep continuing the good work they have been doing since they came into picture.

XT: What should be the strategy for BFC in the final, as the Iraqi side has been unstoppable so far in the competition?

Westwood: In the final, BFC has to play a bit tactical. They have to work on their strengths and play with pride. Remember, in the final, BFC has nothing to lose and everything to gain. It will be a good game, trust me!

XT: An off-topic question. It is heard that Kolkata giant East Bengal had offers for you. Why did you turn down?

Westwood: Honestly, nothing happened like that.
